Frank Dutton started his athletic career at Homer High School in Illinois. He participated in football for four years and basketball for three years. In 1961, he was a second-team All-Conference Tackle for the East Central Conference. In 1960, he was chosen as the American Legion Boys State Award Winner.

After graduation, he went on to play football at Illinois State University from 1962-1965. He lettered as an offensive tackle from 1963-1965. In 1965-1966, he was the Illinois Interscholastic Athletic Association All-Conference Offensive Tackle.

Frank coached at ISU, Lincoln Way and Wheaton Central before being hired at MSHS to be its head football and head boys track coach in 1971. He held the head football position until 1992 and head track position until 1987.

Frank’s overall record in football at MSHS was 129 wins and 76 losses. His 1977 team won the Class 2A State Championship and became MSHS’s first state championship team. His 1982 and 1986 teams made it to the state semifinals in Class 2A football and he had 3 teams advance to the 2A state quarterfinals. Frank was proud to have coached 3 Big Ten scholarship football players and 8 NCAA Division 1AA scholarship players. In 1992, Frank’s son (Doug) was signed by the NFL’s Phoenix Cardinals as a free agent.

His 1987 boys track team was the Class A state runner-up and his 1980 team placed 3rd. Frank’s boys track team won 4 sectional titles. He had 18 individual state placers and 10 state placing relay teams.

On April 9th, 1994, Frank was inducted into the IHSFCA’s Illinois Football Hall of Fame.

Frank married his wife Diane in 1967 and have two children, Doug and Beth.
